Westover tops Hoggard in overtime

WILMINGTON, NC - Hoggard’s tough defense kept them in the game, but couldn’t produce enough offense as the fell 49-46 in overtime to Westover in the first round of the Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington on Monday night.  The Vikings will take on Pender tomorrow at 4:00 in a consolation bracket game.

 

Hoggard (6-4) jumped out to an 11-4 lead and maintained the advantage throughout the first half.  The Vikings led 25-19 at halftime.  Westover used a lot of defensive pressure in the third quarter to tie the score at 29-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

Westover (6-3) built a six point lead before Hoggard fought back to tie the game at 39-39 with just under a minute remaining.  Hoggard’s Darius Plummer nlocked a shot with five seconds left that sent the game into overtime.

 

Hoggard, playing without leading scorer Stilman White, scored the first basket of the overtime before Westover responded and took control once again.  The Vikings had two three point shots that would have tied the game in the last five seconds but both bounced off the rim.

 

Drew Combs led Hoggard with a career-high 18 points.  Lawson Ahrens added 14 points.

 

Hoggard shot well from the floor but committed 20 turnovers on the night.

 

In other first round games, Ashley defeated Pender 49-37, North Mecklenburg defeated Laney 65-37, and New Hanover beat Annapolis Area Christian School 87-79.
