Hoggard advances to second round

WILMINGTON, NC - Stilman White scored with 2.1 seconds remaining to give Hoggard a 64-62 win over West Johnston in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A Sectional playoffs on Monday night in Wilmington.  The Vikings will travel to Fayetteville on Wednesday to take on unbeaten and top-ranked Terry Sanford.

 

West Johnston (14-10) jumped out to a 19-10 lead before Hoggard got going offensively and cut the lead to 25-22 at halftime.  West was able to extend the lead to 38-28 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.

 

Hoggard (15-11) closed the quarter on an 18-8 run that included a Justin Leitch three-pointer to tie the score at 46-46 with 17 seconds remaining in the third.

 

The fourth quarter saw the teams battle back and forth until West Johnston took a 62-59 lead with about 1:30 remaining in the game.  Lawson Ahrens then hit his fifth three-pointer of the game to tie the score.

 

On the following possession, White stole a pass with about 45 seconds left that set up the final play.  Hoggard waited until there was about 10 seconds remaining to start the final play and White drove to the basket for the winning shot.

 

Darius Plummer then stole the West Johnston inbounds pass to seal the win.

 

Hoggard was outrebounded 37-16, but forced 21 turnovers while committing just 11 themselves.  The Vikings only had two turnovers in the second half when they scored 42 points and shot 58 percent from the floor.

 

Ahrens led the Vikings with 25 points while White added 16 points and four assists.

 

Wednesday’s second round opponent Terry Sanford is 27-0, has an average margin of victory of 24 points, and is coached by former Hoggard coach Bill Boyette.

 

Tip-off is set for 7:00 at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville.
