Hoggard opens season with convincing win

WILMINGTON - Stilman White and Lawson Ahrens combined for 36 points and Darius Plummer had a double-double in his varsity debut as Hoggard cruised to a 63-43 win over Topsail in the season opener on Tuesday night in James Hebbe Gym.  The win marked the eighth consecutive year that the Vikings have won their opening game.

 

White, Hoggard’s only returning starter, had 22 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Ahrens connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points.  Plummer scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

 

Hoggard (1-0) pulled away from the Pirates with better defense in the second half.  After allowing the Pirates (1-2) to score 28 points in the first half, the Vikings held Topsail to just 15 points on 29 percent shooting after the break.

 

Hoggard also dominated Topsail on the glass, outrebounding the Pirates 47-25.  The Vikings also had 17 assists on 24 field goals.

 

Drew Combs had six rebounds and five assists to go along with his four points while Ahrens added six rebounds as well.

 

Hoggard will be back in action on Friday when they host Millbrook in a rematch of last year’s Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament Championship Game.

 

The Hoggard JV team also won on Tuesday, defeating Topsail 70-36 behind 13 points from sophomore Nick Stauble.
