Box Score

WILMINGTON - Despite being significantly outsized at every position, the Hoggard Vikings battled back from a 10 point second half deficit to defeat School Sport Australia 59-56 on Thursday night in Hebbe Gym.  Lawson Ahrens scored 21 points on six three-pointers and Stilman White made seven fourth quarter free throws to lead the Vikings.

Hoggard (4-2) trailed at halftime for the first time this season when School Sport hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Australians a 33-31 lead at the break.  They opened the second half on a 9-1 run that gave them a 42-32 lead and forced Hoggard to take a time out.  The Vikings responded with a 9-2 run to pull within three before School Sport scored the final four points of the third quarter to take a 48-41 lead.

Unlike the previous four games, Hoggard’s defense toughened in the fourth quarter and limited School Sport to just eight points.  The Vikings also made nine of their 10 fourth quarter free throw attempts to help seal the win.

Hoggard shot 54 percent from the floor, 70 percent from three-point range, and 77 percent from the free throw line.  Ahrens connected on all six of his three-point attempts.  White finished with 16 points and five assists while Darius Plummer added 14 points.

The School Sport Australia team features 10 of the top 17 and 18 year olds from all over Australia.  They ranged in height from 6’2 to 6’9.  They will travel to Durham for the next stop on their 23 day tour of the Southeast to play in the Mount Zion Tournament.

Hoggard will be back in action on Monday evening at 5:30 in the first round of the Shootout By the Sea in North Myrtle Beach.  The Vikings play Pinewood Prep from South Carolina.
