Hoggard wins again; ties for second

WILMINGTON, NC - Lawson Ahrens scored 24 of his career high 27 points in the second half to lead Hoggard to a 70-61 win over New Hanover on Senior Night in James Hebbe Gym.  Ahrens connected on a school record tying eight three pointers as the Vikings finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the Mideastern Conference after being in last place two weeks ago.

 

New Hanover (15-7, 8-2) used a strong second quarter to build a 31-21 halftime advantage.  They extended their lead to 37-26 with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter before Ahrens and the Vikings got going offensively.  Hoggard (12-10, 5-5) would score 44 points over the last 11:34 with Ahrens scoring 24.

 

Hoggard was 13-25 from three point range in the game and turned the ball over just seven times.  They had 18 assists on their 22 field goals.

 

Stilman White had 11 points and nine assists for Hoggard while Darius Plummer added eight points and seven rebounds.

 

Hoggard will be either the number two or three seed in next week’s Mideastern Conference Tournament.  The seedings will be determined by a draw on Friday. 

 

Before the game, Hoggard honored three seniors playing their last regular season home game in Hebbe Gym.  Tommy Hubbard had six first quarter points to get the Vikings off to a good start.  Grant Nabell had three rebounds and three steals while Justin Leitch had three assists, three steals, two blocks, and played all 32 minutes.
