Hoggard beats Laney at the buzzer

WILMINGTON, NC - The only time Hoggard led was at the final buzzer. Lawson Ahrens hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Hoggard a 49-48 come from behind win over Laney in the Mideastern Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night. The Vikings outscored the Buccaneers 18-5 over the final 5:45 to claim the victory.
Hoggard (8-5, 1-0) had their worst first half performance in quite some time, scoring just 11 points on 5-24 shooting. The Vikings also committed 13 first half turnovers.
The third quarter saw both teams get rolling offensively, but Laney (3-8, 0-1) was able to extend the lead to 12 points heading into the fourth quarter. They still led 43-31 with 5:45 remaining when Ahrens connected on two straight three-pointers to get Hoggard started on their comeback.
Trailing 44-41 with just over a minute remaining, Ahrens hit his fourth three-pointer of the half to tie the game. Following a Laney basket and the 19th Viking turnover of the game, Laney hit a couple of free throws to take a 48-44 lead with 24 seconds left in the game. Drew Combs then hit a short jumper with 15 seconds left to pull Hoggard to within two points.
Laney missed the front end of a one and one with 13 seconds left, but Hoggard was unable to get anything easy offensively and took their final timeout with 3.6 seconds remaining. Laney committed their sixth foul of the half with 2.5 seconds left, which set up the dramatic finish. Ahrens took the inbounds pass from Combs and buried the winning shot from the corner right in front of the Hoggard student section.
Ahrens finished with 19 points while Combs added 12 points and eight assists.
The Hoggard JV team also defeated Laney on Tuesday, winning 44-36 at Michael Jordan Gym. Devon Genwright, Joe O’Donnell, and Patrick Griffin each had eight points to lead Hoggard (4-5, 1-0).
Hoggard will be back in action on Friday when New Bern visits Hebbe Gym at 7:30.
