Fourth quarter dooms Vikings again
December 29, 2009
WILMINGTON, NC - For the fourth time this season, Hoggard let a fourth quarter lead slip away as they fell 57-47 to Pender on the second day of the Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament in Wilmington. The Vikings led 40-35 heading into the final period but were outscored 22-7 over the final eight minutes. Pender was 8-8 from the floor in the fourth quarter.
Hoggard (6-5) struggled again offensively without leading scorer Stilman White. Through three quarters, they had done enough defensively to maintain a lead but unraveled in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Thayer led the Vikings with a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Lawson Ahrens added 11 points, but was just 2-9 from the floor.
Addison Spruill led Pender (6-1) with 33 points, 24 of which came in the second half.
Hoggard will play Annapolis Area Christian School at 2:30 on Wednesday in the seventh place game. Pender will take on Laney for fifth place at 4:00 while Ashley and New Hanover play at 5:30 in the third place game. The championship game will feature North Mecklenburg and Westover at 7:00. |
