Vikings’ rally falls short

WILMINGTON, NC - After Hoggard battled back from a nine point deficit to tie the game, New Hanover outscored the Vikings 9-2 over the final 1:30, giving the Wildcats a 49-42 win in the championship game of the Mideastern Conference tournament.  Lawson Ahrens led Hoggard with 20 points.  The Vikings will open the NCHSAA playoffs on Monday night at home against West Johnston at 7:00.

 

New Hanover (17-7) jumped out to a 9-0 lead and extended it to 15-4 at the end of the first quarter.  Hoggard (14-11) was able to claw back into the game and trailed 21-18 at the half.  Both teams shot just 30 percent from the floor in the first half.

 

The Vikings took their only lead of the game at 25-24 midway through the third quarter.  The Wildcats responded with a 10-0 run to close the quarter to lead 34-25 heading into the final period.

 

Down 40-31 with just under three minutes remaining, Hoggard responded with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 40-40 with about a minute left in the game.  New Hanover then made the final run, closing the game by outscoring the Vikings 9-2.

 

The Vikings once again played without injured leading scorer Stilman White.
