Hoggard to play for Mideastern championship
February 18, 2010
WILMINGTON, NC - Lawson Ahrens scored 17 points to lead Hoggard to a 53-36 win over Laney in the semifinals of the Mideastern Conference Tournament on Thursday night at Brogden Hall. The Vikings will take on New Hanover in Friday night’s championship game at 7:30. The win also clinched the conference’s number two seed and a first round home game in next week’s NCHSAA Sectional playoffs. Three weeks ago, Hoggard was in last place in the conference standings.
Hoggard (14-10) won their sixth straight game with a tremendous second half on both ends of the court. The Vikings held Laney to just 14 points on 21 percent shooting while connecting on 11 of their 16 second half field goal attempts. Hoggard also hit seven three-pointers while Laney missed all 10 of its three point attempts.
A trio of Hoggard sophomores had solid games in their first MEC Tournament semifinal appearances. Drew Combs had nine points and six assists, Tyler Thayer added 10 points off the bench, and Darius Plummer had seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
The Vikings played most of the night without leading scorer Stilman White, who was limited to just seven minutes due to injury.
Friday night will mark the third time in four years and fifth time in eight years that Hoggard has played in the Championship Game. The Vikings won the tournament last year.
New Hanover defeated Rose 68-50 in the second semifinal.
On Friday night, the conference will hold three games at Brogden Hall. Rose and Laney will play at 4:30 to determine the number three seed in next week’s playoffs. Hoggard and Ashley will then square off in the girls title game at 6:00. Hoggard and New Hanover will finish the night and decide the boys champion. |
