Hoggard advances to semifinals

WILMINGTON, NC - Lawson Ahrens stole an inbounds pass with 3.7 seconds left in a tie game and then converted two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to give Hoggard a 48-46 win over Ashley in the first round of the Mideastern Conference Tournament on Tuesday night. The win puts the Vikings into a semifinal matchup with Laney on Thursday night at Brogden Hall at 6:00.
Rose defeated New Bern in overtime in the other first round matchup on Tuesday. The Rampants will take on top seed New Hanover at 7:30 on Thursday at Brogden Hall.
Ashley (10-13) used a hot shooting first quarter to build a 16-12 lead. Hoggard battled back to take a 25-24 halftime lead on a Tyler Thayer three-pointer to close the half. The Eagles shot 77 percent from the floor in the first half.
Hoggard (13-10) built a five point lead in the second half, but Ashley would not go quietly. The Eagles took a 43-41 lead with just under two minutes remaining on an Auston Cain three-pointer. Hoggard answered just seconds later when Ahrens connected on a three-pointer to put the Vikings back on top 44-43. Jovon Genwright extended the lead to 46-43 with a steal and a pair of free throws before Ashley’s Reid Clark tied the game at 46-46 with a three-pointer of his own.
Hoggard called time out with 17 seconds remaining, but missed a shot and the ball went out of bounds off the Vikings with 3.7 seconds left. Following an Ashley time out, Ahrens stole the inbounds pass and was fouled with 1.4 seconds on the clock. Ahrens then connected on both free throws to send Hoggard to the semifinals.
Ahrens finished with 12 points, three assists, and two steals. Stilman White had 16 points and five assists.
Hoggard committed just eight turnovers, had assists on 14 of their 17 field goals, and shot 90 percent from the free throw line. |
