Hoggard comes up short against Eagles

WILMINGTON, NC - Hoggard was unable to overcome a rough offensive first half as they fell 63-50 on Friday night at home against Ashley. The loss ended an 11 game winning streak over the Eagles. Hoggard trailed by 15 points at the break and cut the lead to single digits on multiple occasions in the second half but were unable to complete a comeback.
Ashley (9-7, 2-2) jumped out to a 20-6 lead before Hoggard went on a 9-2 run to make it 22-15. The Eagles countered with an 8-0 run to close the half and led 30-15 at the break. Hoggard shot just 20 percent from the floor in the first half.
Hoggard (8-8, 1-3) had several second half possessions with a chance to cut the lead to under nine points but were never able to connect. They stayed in the game by forcing 23 Ashley turnovers, but allowed the Eagles to shoot 68 percent from the floor in the second half.
Justin Leitch led Hoggard with 13 points. Jovon Genwright had five steals, four assists, and just two turnovers in 27 minutes of play.
The Vikings will begin a three game road trip on Tuesday when the visit New Hanover.
The Hoggard JV team remained unbeaten in four Mideastern Conference games with a 51-36 win at Ashley. The Vikings sit in first place heading into their showdown at home with New Hanover at 5:30 on Tuesday. |
