WILMINGTON - Holiday tournaments and a visit by a couple of Australian teams highlight the 2009-2010 Hoggard varsity basketball schedule that was released on Friday. The Vikings, coming off their fourth consecutive 20 win season, will return to the Shootout by the Sea for the third time in four years and will also play in the Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament before the calendar changes to 2010 this winter.
The Vikings will open at home for the first time in five years when they host Topsail on December 1st. That marks the first of 10 home games on the 22 game slate. Hoggard and the rest of the New Hanover County Schools will play two less regular season games this year due to budget cuts in the school system.
Hoggard will play at home for five of their first six games. Two of those games will come against teams from Australia that are touring the United States. The Vikings have played two games against teams from Down Under, beating Kilsyth in 2003 and losing to Box Hill last season in the Fort Mill Invitational.
The Vikings will then travel to North Myrtle Beach for the Shootout by the Sea. Hoggard won the event in 2006 and won two of three games in the 2007 tournament. Teams and pairings will be announced in early December. The Vikings will then play in the Leon Brogden Tournament where they will play the final game of the first day. Teams and pairings for the Brogden Tournament will be announced in October.
After New Years Day, Hoggard will finish the regular season with 10 conference games. This year, the Mideastern Conference added J.H. Rose and New Bern to replace Jacksonville, West Brunswick ,and White Oak. Senior Night will take place on February 11th when New Hanover visits James Hebbe Gym in the final regular season game.
The Vikings will once again participate in its usual preseason scrimmages at defending NCHSAA East Regional Champion Terry Sanford High School on November 7th and Ashley High School on November 17th.
Hoggard lost nine seniors and four starters from last year’s 23-7 NCHSAA Sweet 16 team. The lone returning starter is junior point guard Stilman White. The Vikings will begin practice on November 2nd. |
