Box Score

WILMINGTON, NC - Hoggard trailed 56-50 with 1:30 remaining in Monday night’s first round NCHSAA playoff game, but closed the game on a 9-1 run to pull out a 59-57 win over Southeast Raleigh. The Vikings will now travel to Clayton for a second round game on Wednesday at 7:00. Tyler Thayer led Hoggard with 23 points while Trevor Singleton added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and the game-winning basket.

Fifth-seeded Hoggard (18-7) jumped out to a 19-10 lead just two minutes into the second quarter. The Vikings couldn’t maintain that advantage, however, largely due to turnovers. Southeast Raleigh (13-10) forced 15 first half turnovers and went into halftime trailing 23-21.

Neither team held more than a six point lead in the second half. The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to take the 56-50 lead before Hoggard managed to summon the late-game magic that helped them to a pair of wins around Christmas.

Thayer hit a three-pointer with 1:27 remaining to make it 56-53. Following a missed free throw by Southeast, Joe O’Donnell finished a three-point play to tie the game at 56-56 with 56 seconds to play. Following a Bulldog free throw with 30 seconds remaining, Trevor Singleton also finished a three-point play to give Hoggard a 59-57 lead with just 18 seconds to play that would prove to be the final points of the game.

The win  marks the seventh consecutive year that Hoggard has won a first round playoff game.

Clayton sports a 20-6 record and is the number four seed in the East Sectional.
