Vikings’ comeback effort falls short

WILMINGTON, NC - Hoggard battled back from an 11 point halftime deficit but came up just short, falling at Laney 57-56 on Friday night. The Vikings took their first second half lead at 56-55 with 30 seconds remaining but were unable to secure a rebound and allowed Laney to hit the game winner with 10 seconds left. Hoggard missed two shots in the final three seconds that would have won the game.

 

Hoggard (13-5, 4-2) trailed 38-27 at halftime after allowing Laney to score 29 points in the second quarter. The Bucs (11-7, 4-2) only scored 28 points in the other three quarters combined.

 

The Vikings were able to get back in the game with their defense and post play in the second half. Hoggard held Laney to just 25 percent shooting after the break and got 18 second half points from their starting post players, Darius Plummer and Trevor Singleton.

 

Plummer finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Singleton had 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

 

Joe O’Donnell added nine points and six assists for the Vikings, who are now tied for second in the Mideastern Conference.

 

Earlier on Friday, the Hoggard JV team defeated Laney 51-45 to move to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Sophomore guard Shawn Robinson had 16 points to lead the Vikings.

 

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday. The Varsity team will host New Bern at 7:30 while the JV’s travel to New Bern for a 6:00 start.
